As an adaptation of Malavikagnimitram, a rare work of the legendary Kalidasa (ancient Indian poet), this mesmerizing love story transpires into a Hindi dance-musical extravaganza through a unique blend of Kuchipudi (Indian classical) and Garba/Raas (Indian folk) dances set to beautiful classical Hindi soundtracks. Poetic Hindi dialogues are intertwined with grand dances and film to transport the audience to an ancient Indian kingdom, where the story unfolds.

Set around 150 B.C.E. in India, Malavika dives into conflicts that arise during India’s struggle to battle the remains of the Greek empire that had just weakened after the defeat of Alexander the Great.  One such conflict forces Prince Madhavasena of Vidarbha (eastern region of Maharashtra) to flee with his sister, Princess Malavika, to escape from the rule of his tyrannical cousin. On their journey to Madhavasena’s ally, King Agnimitra of Vidisha (near Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh), Madhavasena and Malavika face an unexpected turn of events.  When the paths of Agnimitra and the disguised Malavika cross, whether they are star-crossed or united is left to destiny. A well-wisher and trusted minister of Agnimitra plays with destiny, creating an amusing twist and setting the plot apart from the typical love story. The drama is layered with powerful themes and intricacies through artistic dialogues to convey universal morals and values that are relatable to a wide spectrum of individuals. Powerful women, unwavering hope and true passion…expect to laugh, learn and love…that is Malavika .
